Starting January 1, 2025, tourists wishing to explore some of Madeira’s most iconic hiking trails will need to pay a €3 fee. This new measure adds seven trails to the list of paid hikes, joining the already paid Ponta de São Lourenço. The affected trails are:
• Caldeirão Verde
• Balcões
• Risco Levada
• Levada do Rei
• Vereda Areeiro/Pico Ruivo
Why Was This Fee Introduced?
The introduction of this fee isn’t just about generating revenue, but rather a strategy to redistribute the flow of tourists and improve the hiking experience. Local authorities hope that by implementing this fee on the most popular trails, visitors will be encouraged to explore other free levadas that are equally stunning and less crowded.
Currently, many of these trails experience an overload of visitors, which can lead to discomfort due to narrow paths and high foot traffic in relatively small areas. With the fee in place, the goal is to ease pressure on these trails and promote the exploration of lesser-known routes.
The Strain on the Levadas
Madeira’s levadas, often narrow paths carved into the sides of mountains, attract thousands of tourists each year. However, this high popularity has led to overcrowding on certain trails. Routes like Caldeirão Verde and Vereda do Pico Ruivo are breathtaking but have struggled to handle the large influx of tourists.
The fee aims to reduce traffic on these popular trails while encouraging hikers to seek out other free options, helping to distribute tourism more evenly across the island.
Free Alternatives
While these seven trails will now require a fee, it’s important to remember that Madeira still offers a wide variety of free trails. These alternative routes allow visitors to enjoy spectacular scenery and immersive nature experiences without any additional cost. For those looking to avoid the fee, the island’s less-known levadas provide a more peaceful yet equally memorable adventure.
